Linux name – the short story
Do you know the story of the Linux name? Do you know why Linux is called Linux? The name of the system comes from the name of its author – Linus Torvalds. Originally Linus wanted to name his system Freax which was the combination of words “freak” and “free”. The “x” ending of the name was there to indicate that it is a Unix-like system.
To make work on the code easier it was upladed to the FTP server. Server administrator was Ari Lemmke who didn’t think that name “Freax” is a good name for the project. He name the project “Linux” giving Linus a directory on the server named “linux” – ftp://ftp.funet.fi/pub/linux/.
